With an array of convenience food stores, fast food restaurants, food kiosks, street vended foods, mobile food trucks and frozen meals taking over every street corner close to our children citadel of learning, more and more school children are exposed to food poisoning and foodborne illness because the parents and guardian don’t care much about the meals their wards eat while in school and become sick after words!

The fact is, most parents do not create time to learn how to cook and provide simple, inexpensive, tasty and healthy meals for their children and some that are knowledgeable on food preparation have sacrificed this for the social, economic and advertising pressure of low-nutrition fast food and others.

My experience as a food service consultant and canteen operator and coupled with several years of interacting with various school children and food vendors has shown that preparing your children meals isn’t just better for their body, it’s easier on parent budget and it provides the kids with an opportunity to know more about various food cultures.

All I know is that we don’t need a university degree to provide simple, inexpensive, tasty and healthy meals for our children as we prepare them for the school resumption.

We need to constantly provide all the key nutrients like Protein, Carbohydrate, Grain Products, Vegetables& Fruit, Milk Products Meat & Alternatives, Fibre, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Folacin, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Calcium, Iron, Zinc and Magnesium in our children meals.

With the increased reported cases of food borne illness outbreaks, and other food safety issues, it’s more important than ever for parents and guardians including their children to learn about food safety. And, attention to food safety guidelines can add to the educational benefits of the school children and should not be left alone in the hands of the teachers. So, it’s important to practice safe food handling of items and materials at all time.
